The United Nations: Comedic Fodder

Finding images of the United Nations was not difficult- a simple Google image search uncovered photos of the building itself, the international delegates, and various protesters. However, the real magic can be found in the political cartoons that take aim at the organization, my favorite of which is below. There are also three more behind the cut that I simply had to include.

The website for this cartoon, and the three below, can be found here, here, here, and here.

I realize that my additional images don’t exactly follow the directions for this blog post, but each illustrates a different aspect of my white paper position- that the United Nations is a defunct organization, ineffective and uninfluential, especially in matters of human rights violations. The first image, depicting the casualties of the Sudan conflict, displays this quite effectively. The following images depict the relative helplessness, lack of resolve, and occasional corruption of the UN. Humor, when used effectively, can be just as biting as anger or sarcasm. If the goal was the get across the idea that the United Nations is next to useless in matters of human rights violations, then these artists succeeded.

    • I would agree that the UN absolutely has positive international influence, my white paper will focus primarily on ways to change the way the organization functions with respect to human rights violations, addressing how it could become more effective. I’m not trying to say that the organization should be abolished!

  1. I’ll admit that I don’t know much about the effectiveness of the UN, but do you think we’d be better off without it? Or are you going to make suggestions in your white paper for how some issues within it can be resolved? Great topic and images!

  2. Can’t agree with you more, Stephanie. UN has been working on my country’s problem for almost 3 decades and didn’t make any visible progress. So long as they have some superpower nations, holding too much authority, nothing good will ever come out of it. No idea why the whole world is moving towards democracy and UN is not democratic.
