Come on, Canada!

This picture was taken on March 25th, 2009 in Toronto, Canada outside of a local McDonald’s restaurant. The protest occurred when Ontario’s Liberal Government revoked what was known as the Special Diet policy (allowing those with medical conditions on assisted living to have a financial allowance to purchase fresh vegetables). I think this image is very telling considering my topic for the white paper focuses on locally grown, organic, and sustainable food sources. It demonstrates that many people in poor financial situations cannot afford healthy food alternatives and governments often make decisions that further this issue. In my proposal I discussed how low income families are essentially blockaded from organic food sources because of government policy and high prices.

    • Yeah, their own world with their own flag, anthem, government, customs, LANGUAGE… sheesh. Why don’t they just accept reality and become states 51-59. Except Nova Scotia. Doesn’t sound American enough. 🙂

  1. Interesting post, Michael. I wonder what role chain restaurants have in this problem? They have such big revenues and offer a lot of positive opportunities for wealthy nations. Do you think these sorts of restaurants and the money made off of them is being prioritized over the needs of lower income families to have fresh and organic food?

  2. Really good picture. Regarding healthy food and prices, you can buy 6 Mcdonald’s cheeseburgers for the same price as one McDonalds salad…
